After world war2, the euphoria of Peace did not last long. Terror returned. Gangs were plundering and murdering. No celebration for us. We had to go back into the Japanese prison camps and now had to be protected by the Japanese soldiers, who were our enemy. It was a very scary time. Many people who had survived the Japanese occupancy were killed My mother and I had to stay in Banjoebiroe camp until we finally were transported by trucks to safety, at the end of Nov. 1945.Everybody was not safe in that time.

The Indo community lives forever with echoes of horror of their family legacy. Indos had no control of their own bloodlines - that's like blaming someone for being short or tall. Indos are very smart and adaptable and are Global Citizens in every true sense of the word, but most of all they are very humble about their own accomplishments.

Here are statistics of Bersiap:

The death toll of the Bersiap period runs into the tens of thousands. The bodies of 3,600 Indo-Europeans have been identified as killed. However more than 20,000 registered Indo-European civilians were abducted and never returned. The Indonesian revolutionaries lost at least 20,000, often young, fighting men. The Japanese forces lost around 1,000 soldiers and the British forces registered 660 soldiers, mostly British Indians, as killed (with a similar number missing in action).[21] The actual Dutch military were hardly involved [22], as they only started to return to Indonesia in March and April 1946.

Indo-Europeans
3,600 - Deaths
20,000 - Abducted or Missing

Japanese

you missed the point. The culturstelsel is recognized in indonesian history, and documented. The Indo does not want Indonesian government to take responsibility toward the atrocities, they want this history to be recognized. You could shout that racist remark if culturlstelsel is censored from indonesian and dutch history books .

My family left for repatriation, I'm one of these who don't have choice but continuing to live in Indonesia. It is your right to hate Dutch and Indo as much as possible. The point of this website is to educate that Indo people exist and want their history to be recognized.

My Indo grandparents, aunts, and uncles on both sides of my family lived in Java during the Bersiap period. They have all told horror stories of this time period and that it was indeed worse than the fear and brutality they experienced under the Japanese. They witnessed the mutilation and murder of many families.

I have asked several friends and they think it's "interesting" however it doesn't rise much interest like why it is concealed, or whether history should be corrected.

The english wikipedia covers much about the atrocity, however the indonesian one (and I think the history books) focus on the struggle against dutch. again, it's indication that Indo is not considered as part of Indonesian history. in short: revisionism.

Hello Calvin - Curious as to what the reaction is to the average Indonesian if they are informed about the Bersiap period. How would this historical secret be received ? The truth is coming out and it cannot be stopped.

Myself, as a 100% (to my knowledge) Thai, adopted by white Swedish parents at the age of 6 weeks, I feel like a luk kreung or even more western. Since I haven't been brought up in Thailand, nor do I speak the language or know much about it culturally, I find it's important to be proud of yourself.
